Home Of The Brave: A Film by Laurie Anderson (1986)

Home of the Brave is a 1986 American concert film featuring the music of Laurie Anderson, who also directed the movie. The film's full on-screen title is Home of the Brave: A Film by Laurie Anderson. The performances were filmed in Brooklyn during the summer of 1985.

The film included appearances by guitarist Adrian Belew, Beat author William S. Burroughs (who famously briefly dances a slow tango with Anderson during one song), keyboardist Joy Askew, and percussionist David Van Tieghem. Also, Barry Sonnenfeld, who was early in his movie-making career, receives an early film credit for operating "second projection camera" on this film. The film was released by Warner Bros., but was commercially unsuccessful.

A soundtrack album, which contained studio versions of some songs from the film, and live versions of others, was released concurrently with the film (see Home of the Brave (soundtrack)). A music video for the song "Language is a Virus", using footage from the film but the studio recording of the song, received wide airplay.

The film was briefly available on VHS and Laserdisc in the early 1990s, and in January 2007, Anderson announced on her official website that the film is to be released to DVD in the near future as part of a box set of her films; as of December 2008 no release has occurred.

Musical selections included songs taken from Anderson's 1984 album, Mister Heartbreak (the film was shot during a tour in support of the album), as well as a couple of selections from her United States multimedia show of 1983 and several original pieces. Warner Brothers requested Anderson create a single-friendly release from the soundtrack, so she recorded a faster-tempo, "dance mix" version of the song "Smoke Rings". Ultimately, this recording was not released; however, it can be heard during the All-Night Diner sequence of her short film What You Mean We?.

The first song performed by Anderson in the film is "Excellent Birds", a collaboration with Peter Gabriel from Mister Heartbreak. Although Gabriel does not appear in this film and the song is not performed as a duet, Home of the Brave was released a few months after a second version with Anderson was released as "This Is the Picture (Excellent Birds)" on Gabriel's album, So.

Gabriel had also provided vocals for "Gravity's Angel" on Mister Heartbreak. Guitarist Adrian Belew sings the part more prominently in the film.

Studio versions of "Smoke Rings", "Language is a Virus" and "Talk Normal" are used on the album, as is "Credit Racket" which is also a studio track, played over the closing credits in the film. None of the other performances in this film have to date been released in audio format.

In addition to the above, William Burroughs also performs two brief excerpts from "Sharkey's Night", the song he performs on Anderson's album Mr. Heartbreak. In the film, Anderson performs the complete song herself at the end of the movie.

Grease is a film directed by Randal Kleiser and based on Jim Jacobs' and Warren Casey's musical, Grease. The film stars John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway, and Eve Arden. It was originally released to theaters on June 16, 1978. It was filmed mostly at Excelsior High School in Norwalk, Ca, as well as Venice High School in Venice, California. It was released in the U.S. on VHS during the 1980s; the latest VHS release was June 23, 1998 as 20th Anniversary Edition following a theatrical re-release that March. On September 24, 2002, it was released on DVD for the first time. On September 19, 2006, it was re-released on DVD as the Rockin' Rydell Edition, which includes new bonus features and a black Rydell High T-Bird jacket cover or the Target-exclusive Pink Ladies cover.

Production

Casting

Singer Olivia Newton-John had done little acting before this film. She appeared in the 1970 film Toomorrow - a science fiction musical that pre-dated her initial chart success with 1971's If Not For You. Cast with Newton-John and three male leads in an attempt by Don Kirshner to create another Monkees, the film failed miserably; this led Newton-John to demand a screen test for Grease to avoid another career setback. The screen test was done with the drive-in movie scene.

Two actors who were seen for the film were Henry Winkler and Marie Osmond. Winkler, who was playing Fonzie on Happy Days, was originally chosen to play Danny, but, having twice already played similarly leather-clad 1950s hoods in 1974's The Lords of Flatbush as well as Happy Days, turned down the role for fear of being typecast. Osmond turned down the role of Sandy because she did not like the fact that Sandy had to "turn bad" to get the boy. Adult film star Harry Reems was originally signed to play Coach Calhoun; however, producers got cold feet weeks before filming and replaced him with Sid Caesar.

Dinah Manoff passed her audition without being given a singing or dancing tryout. Her skills in those areas proved limited, so she was moved into the background during the song numbers.

Cars

* Danny's race car is a modified 1948 Ford Deluxe.
* Leo's car was a modified 1949 Mercury.
* Frenchy's car is a 1956 Dodge Custom Royal
* Danny's Drive-in car was a 1949 Dodge Wayfarer.

Costumes

* Danny's blue windbreaker at the beginning of the film was intended as a nod to Rebel Without a Cause (1955).
* Because of a zipper breaking, Olivia Newton-John had to be sewn into the pants she wears in the last sequence (the carnival at Rydell), and was unable to remove the trousers until the filming of that scene was over.
* Stockard Channing's original costume was going to be a purple blouse and green skirt. Unfortunately, it was a bad fit and she had to wear black.
* Didi Conn was originally asked to dye her hair golden, but refused. She also refused to have her hair dyed green at the Carnival ending, stating in the DVD that she was supposed to explain to the group that she got into a pool that contained
too much chlorine (referencing a joke from the original play) and colored her hair into a bright green color. She refused, stating in the interview "Don't turn me into a joke."

Criticism

* In November 2002, Camille Paglia asserted in an Interview magazine with Donna Mills that the character of Sandy in Grease was based on Mills' experiences as a Chicago-area teen, even though no interview questions covered the subject.
* Randal Kleiser hated the opening title song, "Grease" (he thought that the cynical lyrics and disco beat were inappropriate for a film set in the 1950s) and the song "You're The One That I Want" (saying it "sounded awful").

Reception

Although Travolta was already famous from the movie Saturday Night Fever and the television sitcom Welcome Back Kotter, Grease reconfirmed his status as a superstar. Newton-John's fame also reached new heights after the movie released. The movie received five Golden Globe Award nominations in 1979 and was the highest grossing (US) movie of 1978.

The movie's soundtrack was a number one album in many different countries. The song "You're The One That I Want" was released as a single prior to the film's release and became an immediate chart-topper, despite not being in the stage show or having been seen in the film at that time. In the United Kingdom, the two Travolta/Newton-John duets, "You're The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights", were both number one hits and appear 6th and 21st respectively in the official all-time UK best-selling singles list issued in 2002. The song "Hopelessly Devoted to You" was nominated for an Academy Award (1979) for Best Music - Original Song. The movie's title song was also a number one smash hit single for Frankie Valli.

Grease spawned a sequel, Grease 2 (1982) (with the only cast members from the original movie being Blanche, Coach Calhoun, Eugene, Frenchy, Leo (the Scorpions' gang leader), and Principal McGee) that was much less successful. Patricia Birch, the original movie's choreographer, directed the ill-fated sequel. It would be the only movie that she would direct. After the success of the original, Paramount intended to turn Grease into a multi-picture franchise with at least three sequels planned and a TV series in the pipeline. When Grease 2 flopped at the box office, all the plans were scrapped.

This movie was re-released to theaters in 1998 to mark the 20th anniversary. It also ranked number 21 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 Best High School Movies.

Voted the best musical ever on Channel 4's 100 greatest musicals.

Soundtrack

The Grease soundtrack is the original motion picture soundtrack for the 1978 film Grease.

The most successful songs from the soundtrack were written specifically for the film. They included the Billboard number-one hits "You're the One That I Want", "Grease" and the number-three, Academy Award-nominated "Hopelessly Devoted to You".

The soundtrack album hit the top of the charts in the U.S. during the summer of 1978, replacing The Rolling Stones' Some Girls.

Some of the backing musicians debuted as Toto after their fame from the soundtrack. They also performed on Olivia Newton-John's album Totally Hot and Physical.

Barry Lyndon (1975)

Barry Lyndon (1975) is a period film by Stanley Kubrick loosely based on the novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon (1844) by William Makepeace Thackeray. It recounts the exploits of an unscrupulous 18th century Irish adventurer (Barry Lyndon né Redmond Barry), particularly his rise and fall within English society. Ryan O'Neal stars as the title character.

In recent years, it has come to be regarded not only as one of Kubrick's finest films, but indeed as a classic of world cinema. It was part of Time magazine's poll of the 100 best films as well as the Village Voice poll conducted in 1999 and was ranked #27 in 2002 in a poll of film critics conducted by Sight and Sound. Director Martin Scorsese has cited Barry Lyndon as his favorite Kubrick movie.

Background

After 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick made plans for a film about Napoleon Bonaparte. During pre-production, however, Sergei Bondarchuk and Dino De Laurentiis' Waterloo was released and subsequently failed at the box office. As a result, Kubrick's financiers pulled their funding for the film. He was furious, having put considerable time and effort into the development of the Napoleon project. Left with no alternative, he turned his attention to his next film, A Clockwork Orange. Barry Lyndon followed, in part to take advantage of the copious research Kubrick had done for the aborted Napoleon.

Kubrick was also interested in Thackeray's Vanity Fair but dropped the project when a serialised version for television was produced. He told an interviewer:

"At one time, Vanity Fair interested me as a possible film but, in the end, I decided the story could not be successfully compressed into the relatively short time-span of a feature film...as soon as I read Barry Lyndon I became very excited about it."

The film did not do well at the box office in the United States, but it was a hit in Europe. This mixed reaction factored in Kubrick's filming of Stephen King's The Shining — a project that would not only please him artistically, but also succeed financially.

Production

Photography

The film is famous for its cinematography, which was overseen by director of photography John Alcott (who won an Oscar for his work), and for the technical innovations that made some of its most spectacular images possible.

Alcott used three f/0.70 lenses developed by Zeiss for NASA for use in the Apollo moon landings, which Kubrick discovered in his search for a lens that could film in low-light situations. The super-fast lens allowed him to shoot scenes lit with actual candlelight with an average lighting volume of only three candlepower. In fact, the film features the largest lens aperture in film history.

Most shots, however, were achieved with conventional lenses but were lit in a way that mimics natural light. This has the dual result of making the lighting seem more realistic and giving a look to the film similar to 18th century paintings (because, of course, painters of the period were depicting a world devoid of electric lighting). For example, to light a room, rather than placing the lights inside as would be done in a conventional movie, the lights were placed outside and aimed through the windows, which were covered in a diffuse material to scatter the light evenly through the room. Not only did this give the look of natural daylight coming in through the windows, it also protected the historic locations from the damage caused by mounting the lights on walls or ceilings and the heat from the lights. One telltale sign of this method occurs in the scene where Barry duels Lord Bullingdon. Though it appears to be lit entirely with natural light, one can see that the light coming in through the cross-shaped windows in the barn appears blue in color, while the main lighting of the scene coming in from the side is not. This is because the light through the cross-shaped windows is daylight from the sun, which when recorded on the film stock used by Kubrick showed up as blue-tinted compared to the incandescent electric light coming in from the side.

Principal photography took 300 days, from spring 1973 through early 1974, with a break for Christmas.

Locations

Several of the interior scenes were filmed in Powerscourt House, a famous 18th century mansion in County Wicklow, Republic of Ireland. The house was destroyed in an accidental fire several months after filming (November 1974), so the movie serves as a record of the lost interiors. Other locations included Castle Howard in England (exteriors of the Lyndon estate), Corsham Court (various interiors and the music room scene), Dublin Castle in Ireland (the chevalier's home), Petworth House, West Sussex, Ludwigsburg Palace near Stuttgart and Frederick the Great's Neues Palais at Potsdam near Berlin. Some exterior shots were filmed at Waterford Castle and Island.

Awards

The film received Academy Awards for Best Art Direction (Ken Adam, Roy Walker, Vernon Dixon), Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Musical Score. Kubrick was nominated three times, for Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Kubrick won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for Best Direction. John Alcott won for Best Cinematography. Barry Lyndon was also nominated for Best Film, Art Direction, and Costume Design.

Plot

As a Prinny, the player is tasked with tracking down the ingredients for the 'Ultra Dessert' for Etna.

Gameplay

Prinny will make use of the PSP's wireless functionality to record play and download maps and other bonuses. One of the unique feature of the game is that the player gets 1000 lives.

Jan Hammer - Miami Vice The Complete Collection

Jan Hammer, who revolutionized the relationship between TV shows and music in the mid-80s with his work on Miami Vice, is releasing Miami Vice: The Complete Collection, a definitive compilation of his compositions from the breakthrough show. At first, the release of the two CD set might seem to be just another example of the resurging interest in all things 80s, but in fact, Hammer was moved to create this two CD set of 42 tunes in direct response to the thousands of requests his fans submitted to his web site.

Miami Vice: The Complete Collection includes both previously and never-before released tracks. The first of the set’s two CDs contains all 20 of Hammer’s compositions previously featured on five separate MCA releases: the soundtracks Miami Vice, Miami Vice II, Miami Vice III, and Jan Hammer’s Escape from Television and Snapshots. The second CD features 22 tracks never released or heard anywhere but on the television show.

While the songs on CD #2 were recorded specifically for this project, they will not be unfamiliar to Miami Vice’s dedicated fan base. In fact, Hammer would not have even considered producing them were it not for the volume of requests which have come his way daily via his web site (www.janhammer.com) Once reruns of Miami Vice began to air on TNN in January of 2001, traffic to the site, which was already receiving upward of 25,000 hits per week, increased to nearly 40,000 hits weekly. And many of those visitors wanted more Miami Vice music. Says Hammer: “Fans would make reference to themes that I had forgotten about after all these years, so I went back, watched the shows for myself, and realized how much music there was that cried out to be released.”

In order to maintain continuity with the show’s original sound, Hammer utilized his vintage 1980s equipment, along with more current state of art digital gear.

Miami Vice: The Complete Collection has just been released by One Way Records. To accommodate the demands of Hammer’s often-rabid online fans, however, it was available exclusively on his web site for two months prior to its street date, resulting in strong initial sales.

Until Miami Vice, most television show themes were rarely, if ever, released commercially. Although Hammer scored the show for less than four seasons, his music from Miami Vice has to date resulted in 42 commercially released tunes, including two worldwide hit singles, “Crockett’s Theme” and the “Miami Vice Theme.” The latter is the only original instrumental theme written for a television show to reach #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart. The “Miami Vice Theme” also reached the #5 position on Billboard’s Black Singles chart and #3 on its Dance chart. At the 1986 Grammy Awards, “Miami Vice Theme” won Hammer two awards: “Best Pop Instrumental Performance” and “Best Instrumental Composition.” The first Miami Vice album also hit #1 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, where it remained for 12 weeks, and has sold over four million copies domestically and over seven million copies worldwide.

Fitzcarraldo (1982)

Fitzcarraldo is a 1982 film written and directed by Werner Herzog and starring Klaus Kinski as the title character. It portrays would-be rubber baron Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald, an Irishman called Fitzcarraldo in Peru, who has to pull a steamship over a steep hill in order to access a rich rubber territory. The film is derived from the real-life story of Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fitzcarrald.

Production

The story was inspired by the real life Peruvian rubber baron Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald; in the 1890s, Fitzcarrald did bring a steamship across an isthmus from one river into another, but it weighed only 30 tons and he had it dismantled before doing so.

In his autobiographical film Portrait Werner Herzog, Herzog has stated that the film's spectacular production was partly inspired by the engineering feats of ancient standing stones. The film production was an incredible ordeal, and famously involved moving a 320-ton steamship over a hill without the use of special effects. Herzog believes that no one has ever performed a similar feat in history, and likely never will again, calling himself "Conquistador of the Useless". Scenes were also shot onboard the ship while it crashed through rapids, injuring three of the six people involved in the filming.

The casting of the film was also quite difficult. Jason Robards was originally cast in the title role, but he became ill and was forced to leave. Herzog then considered casting Jack Nicholson, and even playing Fitzcarraldo himself, before Klaus Kinski accepted the role. By that point, forty percent of shooting was complete and Herzog insisted on a total reshoot with Kinski. Mick Jagger was originally cast as Fitzcarraldo's assistant Wilbur, but his shooting schedule expired and he departed to tour with the Rolling Stones. Herzog dropped Jagger's character from the script and reshot the film from the beginning.

Klaus Kinski himself was a major source of tension, as he fought with Herzog and other members of the crew and greatly upset the native extras. In his documentary My Best Fiend, Herzog says that one of the native chiefs offered to murder Kinski for him, but that he declined because he needed Kinski to complete filming.

Les Blank's documentary Burden of Dreams, about the production of the film, documents these many hardships. Blank's footage, which also appears in Herzog's Portrait Werner Herzog and My Best Fiend contains some of the only surviving footage of Robards and Jagger in Fitzcarraldo and many scenes documenting the ship's journey over the mountain, along with several episodes of Kinski's raving.

Locations used for the film include: Manaus, Brazil; Iquitos, Peru; Pongo de Mainique, Peru; Puerto Maldonado, Peru.

Criticism

Film critic Dan Schneider, regarding the excellence of the film being taken for granted, coming from a director like Herzog, wrote:

"...at film’s end, there is a close moment between Fitz and Captain Paul. Yet, Fitz whispers it into the Captain’s ear, so the viewer never knows what is said. Having seen the more recent Lost In Translation, where what was whispered between that film’s two lead characters was taken as a ‘stroke of genius’ by tyro director Sofia Coppola, it does not surprise me that she stole that idea from Herzog. In this film, since it is a greater film, and the two characters have gone through far more, the gesture is even more powerful and moving. The very fact that a moment like that goes uncommented upon by all the major critics of the film, then and now, yet when it appears in a film like Coppola’s is lauded without surcease, shows how much more a film like Fitzcarraldo has to offer than a rather light piece of fluff like Lost In Translation."

A Charlie Brown Christmas is an album by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, released in 1965 as the soundtrack to the CBS Christmas television special of the same name. It is among the most popular holiday music albums of all time. There was also a book-and-record set featuring music, dialogue and stills from the Christmas special released in 1977 on a 45 RPM vinyl record by CBS Records.

This soundtrack has become as well-known as the story itself. In particular, the instrumental "Linus and Lucy" has come to be regarded as the signature musical theme of the Peanuts specials. Additionally "Christmas Time is Here" has become a popular holiday tune. The album contains some music that does not appear in the TV special, it also fails to include two musical themes which appear in the special.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia--keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection.

The Star Wars Holiday Special

The Star Wars Holiday Special was a two-hour television special (including commercials) set in the Star Wars galaxy. It was the first official Star Wars spinoff produced. It was directed by Steve Binder. It was broadcast in its entirety in the United States only once on Friday, November 17, 1978 on CBS-TV from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time (EST). It was also broadcast once on Belgian television on New Year's Day, January 1, 1981, from 3:50 PM to 5:27 PM (Local Time), in its entirety without commercial interruptions, once in France on New Year's Day, January 1, 1979, from 2:00 PM to 3:13 PM (Local Time) dubbed in French in a 72 mn shortened version without any ads, and on an Australian network television in the early 1980s. In it, Chewbacca and Han Solo visit Kashyyyk, Chewbacca's home world, to celebrate Life Day. Along the way, they are pursued by agents of the Galactic Empire who are searching for rebels on the planet. The special introduces three members of Chewbacca's family: his father Attichitcuk, his wife Mallatobuck, and his son Lumpawarrump.

The main storyline of the film, which is set in 2 ABY, transpires on Kashyyyk. During the film, scenes also take place in outer space and in spacecraft including the Millennium Falcon and an Imperial Star Destroyer. The variety-show segments and cartoon introduce a few other locales, such as a cantina on the desert planet of Tatooine and a gooey, reddish water planet known as Panna.

The program also features some cameos (although the cameo actors are listed as stars) by other Star Wars characters, including Luke Skywalker, C-3PO, R2-D2, Darth Vader, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa (who sings the film's "theme song", set to the music of John Williams's Star Wars theme, near the end). The program also features a cartoon produced by Toronto-based Nelvana that officially introduces the bounty hunter Boba Fett.

The film is notorious for its negative reception. George Lucas had limited involvement with the film's production, and he was unhappy with the results. David Acomba, a classmate of George's at U. S. C. film school, had been selected to direct the special, but he chose to leave the project, a decision supported by Lucas. The special has never been re-aired or officially released on video, but has been widely bootlegged by fans, many of whom consider it ironically hilarious or kitschy.

Reception

Generally, The Star Wars Holiday Special has received a large amount of criticism, both from Star Wars fans and the general public. David Hofstede, author of What Were They Thinking?: The 100 Dumbest Events in Television History, ranked the holiday special at number one, calling it "the worst two hours of television ever." Shepard Smith, a news anchor for the FOX News Channel, referred to it as a "'70s train wreck, combining the worst of Star Wars with the utter worst of variety television." Actor Phillip Bloch explained on a TV Land special entitled The 100 Most Unexpected TV Moments, that the special "just wasn't working. It was just so surreal." On the same program, Ralph Garman, a voice actor for the show Family Guy, explained that "The Star Wars Holiday Special is one of the most infamous television programs in history. And it's so bad that it actually comes around to good again."

The only aspect of the special which has been generally well-received is the animated segment which introduces the bounty hunter Boba Fett, who would later become a popular character when he appeared in the Star Wars theatrical films.

Segments

The Star Wars Holiday Special is important for being the first film-length Star Wars story after the original theatrical film, and for showing an expanded look at parts of that universe. The main focus of the holiday special is the Blockade of Kashyyyk. But for the most part, the plot serves as little more than a means to string together a series of musical numbers, celebrity cameos, and other variety-show acts. These include songs and comedy routines by such 1970s talents as Jefferson Starship, Diahann Carroll, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Bea Arthur. Easily the most notable segment is an animated cartoon featuring the pre-Empire Strikes Back debut of Boba Fett.

Music

The special features four songs. The first, "This Minute Now," sung by Diahann Carroll, is best remembered for the bizarre monologue which precedes it in which Carroll — who is supposed to be an image created by a virtual-reality machine — tells Chewbacca's father, Itchy, that she is his "fantasy" and suggestively invites him to "experience" her. The second musical number is the song "Light the Sky on Fire", performed by Jefferson Starship, which is presented as a 3-D music video watched by one of the Imperial guards; during production the song was given the working title "Cigar-Shaped Object (Vanished Without A Trace)". Later, Bea Arthur, who plays a bartender in the Mos Eisley cantina, sings "Good Night, But Not Goodbye" to the same set of aliens that were seen in the Cantina in A New Hope, including, as the back-up musicians, the Cantina's resident group, Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes. Finally, at the end of the special, Carrie Fisher sings a song in celebration of Life Day to the tune of the Star Wars main title.

Comedy

Harvey Korman provides comedy in three of the special's skits, including the Cantina skit with Bea Arthur. He also performs two solo routines: one as Chef Gormanda, four-armed parody of Julia Child, whose four arms allow her to work much faster than Malla can keep up with, and one as a malfunctioning Amorphian android in an instruction video watched by Lumpy. Art Carney has a more integral role in the story, playing a trader named Saun Dann on Kashyyyk who is a member of the Rebellion and helps Chewie's family. His segments are also largely played for laughs, and at one point includes a scene alluding to his character Ed Norton from The Honeymooners, where an Imperial officer demands that he "get on with it" while Carney dallies with a prop.

The cartoon

The high point of the special is generally considered to be the animated segment produced by Nelvana known as "The Faithful Wookie". While the artistic style takes great liberties — R2-D2's body is rubbery, C-3PO actually blinks (with vertical eyelids) and Han's face is nearly unrecognizable — the animation is above average for television animation of the period and the music and sound effects are straight out of the film, along with the vocal talents of the main cast from the film. Not only does the cartoon introduce Boba Fett, but his jet pack and rope gun as well, which are not used again in the movies until Return of the Jedi four and a half years later.

Hasbro has released a Boba Fett action figure, using the likeness from the animated cartoon, and titled "Boba Fett (Animated Debut)".

Also Funko is releasing a Star Wars Holiday Special Boba Fett Bobblehead in a special Limited Edition as part of their new Star Wars Bobblehead series. His coloring in the Star Wars Holiday Special was unique, and far from the way he eventually appeared on the big screen in The Empire Strikes Back.

Other bits

The Holiday Special also includes a circus-style acrobatics routine that includes uneven bars and juggling. All the acts were loosely linked together with material which involves the Wookiees' preparation for Life Day, Han and Chewie's attempt to evade the Imperials and make it to Chewie's family, and the Imperial garrison's search for rebels.

Versions and availability today

The Star Wars Holiday Special was mostly forgotten after its only airing in 1978, until sometime in the early-to-mid-1990s when individuals came forward with original VHS recordings of the TV airing. Some of them began to copy the show and sell it as a bootleg video at conventions and on eBay.

It soon became a cult classic among Star Wars fans despite (or perhaps because of) its criticisms. File-sharing technologies have made the special more widely available to fans curious to see for themselves. Online video sites such as YouTube have also been known to host clips of the special. To this day, though, the special has still not been made officially available.

Much of the album is sung and narrated by British actor Anthony Daniels, reprising his role as C-3PO from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Sound designer Ben Burtt also provided sound effects for R2-D2 and Chewbacca.

Production

The album was produced by Meco Monardo (who had previously recorded Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk), with the hope that this would be the first in a series of annual Star Wars Christmas albums. The majority of the album's original songs were written by Maury Yeston, a Yale University music professor who went on to become a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical composer.

The album is notable for featuring the first professional recording of Jon Bon Jovi (credited as John Bongiovi), who sings lead vocals on the song "R2-D2 We Wish You A Merry Christmas." Jon's cousin Tony Bongiovi co-produced the album and ran the recording studio, where Jon was working sweeping floors at the time.

After the first printing of 150,000 copies, Meco was asked to allow George Lucas' name to be credited beside his under "Concept by". Due to the success of the album, the studios were ready to do a second printing, which would give Lucas credit. But before the second record printing could be done, RSO Records shut down due to an unrelated lawsuit.

Christmas in the Stars was recorded two years after The Star Wars Holiday Special aired, and they have no connection other than the fact that they were both marketed in conjunction with the Christmas holidays.

Release

LP and tape

The complete album was released by RSO records on LP and cassette in November 1980, to cash in on the increasingly popular Star Wars saga. This original printing featured cover art by the Star Wars film's production artist, Ralph McQuarrie.

Also in 1980, RSO released a 45 of "What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)" (credited to The Star Wars Intergalactic Droid Choir and Chorale) b/w "R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas" with a picture sleeve. In late 1983, a second 45 from the album was released by Polygram on the RSO label, "R2-D2's Sleigh Ride" b/w "Christmas in the Stars", also with a picture sleeve.

This album was one of the industry's first non-classical-or-jazz projects to be recorded and mixed digitally, and when "What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)" reached #69 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in 1980 it was only the third digitally recorded single in chart history.

The album made its CD debut in 1994 as an unheralded budget-label release by JFC/Polygram Special Markets (catalog # 314 520 216-2), with all artwork and references to Star Wars (except for those in the song titles) removed from the packaging. The only credit on the package was "Meco," and it featured a generic cover photo of spacey looking Christmas boxes and decorations.

It was released on CD again, with Ralph McQuarrie's cover art restored, on October 15, 1996, this time by Rhino records, during the popularity of the Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire project.

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

The Muppet Christmas Carol is the fourth feature film to star The Muppets, and the first produced after the death of Muppets creator Jim Henson. Released in 1992, it is one of many film adaptations of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Production

This film was directed by Jim Henson's son, Brian. Taking over the puppeteering role of Kermit, originally performed by Jim Henson before his death in 1990, was Steve Whitmire. It was shot in Shepperton Studios, England and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Despite the use of Muppets throughout filming and a humorous spin on much of the story, this film is a fairly close adaptation of the original story. The film is even interspersed with scenes of a narrator (Gonzo playing Dickens), who, along with the characters, recites many of Dickens's original lines. One notable difference from the original story is the addition of Jacob Marley's brother, Robert, who was not present in Dickens' story. It is suggested this name was chosen as an oblique reference to musician Bob Marley. Another alteration involved changing the name of the character Fezziwig to Fozziwig, as Fozzie Bear played the role.

This is the first Muppet movie in which the story revolves around characters played by human beings, specifically, Ebenezer Scrooge played by Michael Caine. The rest of the cast consisted of mostly Muppet performers. Several pivotal roles — in particular, the three Christmas Spirits — were portrayed by specially-created Muppet characters. It was at one time considered that well-known Muppets would be cast in these roles (Miss Piggy, Scooter, and Gonzo, specifically) before it was decided that it would detract from the ominous effect the spirits would need to convey. Only the Ghost of Christmas Present is clearly a muppet (albeit a giant one), while the Ghost of Christmas past is a young human-like child and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come is a cloaked and terrifying figure as per tradition.

It was dedicated to the memory of Jim Henson and Richard Hunt, two original Muppet performers, who died before the film's release. This production was originally planned to be a TV Halloween special in 1991. It was soon changed into a Christmas TV special of Charles Dickens' holiday novel but it grew too big to air on TV. It finally went to theaters in December 1992.

Distribution

This is the first Muppet movie produced by The Walt Disney Company. As a side note, the Muppets featured in the film would later be purchased by Disney. Other than the film's theatrical releases, the film has also been made available on home video formats. It was released on VHS and twice on DVD, in Region 1. The first DVD release in 2002 was a full-screen only affair. The film was re-released on DVD in 2005 in conjunction with Kermit the Frog's 50th anniversary celebration; this time the DVD contained both full-screen and wide-screen presentations. The film was also released in Region 2. The song "When Love Is Gone" was cut from the DVD release, despite having featured on the VHS release.

Reception

This film, like other Muppet films, did not make much of an impact during its theatrical release, having to face competition from Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Disney's Aladdin. The film grossed a total of $27,281,507 domestically. As of today, Rotten Tomatoes reported that 66% of critics gave positive reviews. It became more popular upon its original release on VHS.

Season 5

Season five of Miami Vice is the final season of the series. The season premiered on November 4, 1988 with the "Hostile Takeover: Part 3" premiere on NBC. The series concluded on May 21, 1989, with "Freefall" after 17 episodes, but later NBC aired three new episodes after the series finale. They were "World of Trouble" (June 14, 1989), "Miracle Man" (June 21, 1989), and "Leap of Faith" (June 28, 1989). Additionally, USA Network aired "Too much, Too Late" on January 25, 1990, since NBC would not show that episode due to its strong topic of child molestation (NBC and USA are now owned by the same company). Season five regular cast members included Don Johnson, Philip Michael Thomas, Saundra Santiago, Michael Talbott, Olivia Brown, and Edward James Olmos.

Pizzicato Five - Made in USA

Pizzicato Five (often known simply by the initials P5) is a Japanese pop group best known to audiences in the West in their later incarnation as a duo of Maki Nomiya and Yasuharu Konishi. The group, widely credited (along with Flipper's Guitar) with spearheading the shibuya-kei movement of Tokyo in the 1990s, is known for eclectic and energetic compositions that often sound like "new" releases from the late 1960s hipster scene. The catchphrase "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" captured the group's ironic stance and eager attitude. The group broke up in March 2001.

Pizzicato Five was a hugely prolific group during its 16-year-long existence, usually releasing at least an album each year in addition to various EPs and remix albums.

Made in USA was Pizzicato Five's second release in the United States under the label Matador Records.

Avalon (2001)

Avalon is a Japanese/Polish science fiction movie by Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Oshii. It was released in 2001. The name of the film originates from the island Avalon in the legend of King Arthur.

Overview

The film is set in a bleak future, where the population is hooked on an immersive illegal virtual reality video game called Avalon. Despite its popularity the game can be deadly, leaving players' bodies catatonic in the real world. One player of the game, Ash (played by Polish actress Małgorzata Foremniak), hears of a secret level hidden within Avalon. The film follows her quest to find the level.

The film's colour palette is mainly sepia tones, helping to blur the line between the real world and that within the game itself.

The film is typically Mamoru Oshii styled in its pacing and editing. It is relatively slow paced, reinforcing the mundane nature of the world Ash lives in and highlighting the excitement of playing the game. The film also features a basset hound, a breed of dog common in Oshii's films, since he has one, named Gabriel.

The film's score is by regular Oshii collaborator, Kenji Kawai.

Reception

Even though the film was produced and directed by a Japanese crew, it is a half European-half Asian work since Avalon was co-produced by a Polish film company, starred Polish actors and was filmed mostly in Wrocław, Poland with Polish dialogue.

"Shooting it in Japan was impossible," Oshii advised interviewer Andrez Bergen in a major article that appeared in Japan's Daily Yomiuri newspaper in 2004. "I didn't think of using a Japanese cast. I considered shooting in the UK or Ireland, but the towns and scenery in Poland matched my image for the movie."

In Europe, Avalon was selected for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and won awards at other European festivals. It was awarded Best Cinematography at the Catalonian International Film Festival 2001"in Spain. In the United Kingdom, it won the "Best Film" award at the London Sci-Fi Film Festival 2002.

However, the film received only limited release in North America (with most of its fanbase created via the circulation of bootleg DVDs imported from Asia) until Miramax released it on DVD in late 2003. The North American version has added narration to make it easier for Americans to understand the plot; although the option to view the film without the English overdubbing is provided, the subtitles still display the added dialogue. The British region-free DVD has literal English subtitles which explain the King Arthur connection better and does not display added dialogue.

Such viewer help was not used in European countries, like France, where local editions only feature optional subtitles about the Polish sung opera piece, in the Polish spoken original version only.

Rock & Rule (1983)

Rock & Rule is a 1983 animated film from the Canadian animation studio Nelvana. It was produced and directed by the company's founders, Michael Hirsh, Patrick Loubert and Clive A. Smith. The film features the voices of Paul Le Mat, Susan Roman and Don Francks, with Catherine O'Hara, Chris Wiggins and Maurice LaMarche as guests.

Centering on rock and roll music, the film includes songs by Cheap Trick, Chris Stein and Debbie Harry of the pop group Blondie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and Earth, Wind & Fire. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic United States populated by mutated humanoid animals. Protagonists and antagonists alike are rock musicians in this movie.

With John Halfpenny, Patrick Loubert and Peter Sauder at the helm of its screenplay, Rock & Rule was a heavily-derived spinoff of Nelvana's earlier TV special from 1978, The Devil and Daniel Mouse, and took around five years to complete. Upon its release, it received little promotion in the United States because of the recent string of box office flops from its distributor, MGM, and newly-acquired franchise United Artists.

Despite its financial underperformance in the mid-1980s, and a rare-to-find home video release at that time, the film built up a cult following from its repeated airings on HBO and Showtime. In 2005, Unearthed Films released a special two-disc edition DVD of the film.

Production and Release

Rock & Rule was Nelvana's first animated feature film, as well as the first of its kind to be produced entirely in Canada. The film spent several years in production and underwent many changes from the original concept, which was titled Drats! and aimed for children. The cost of production, $8 million in studio resources, nearly put Nelvana out of business.

The animation was of unusually high quality for the era (it began production in 1979), and the special effects were mostly photographic techniques, as computer graphics were in their infancy. Computers were used to generate only a few images in the film.

Controversy and reaction

Because of scenes involving drug use, implied devil worship, and mild sexuality, the film could only be marketed to an adult audience. It performed poorly at the box office (with only $30,000 in ticket sales), and no soundtrack album was ever released (though some of the songs appeared as B-sides on subsequent albums by the musicians involved with the film). Commentary on the Special Edition DVD partially lays the blame for the film's poor performance in the U.S. on MGM. The DVD claims that management at MGM changed and the new overseers of the project were not as enthusiastic about the film as their predecessors. This caused script revisions and other changes which damaged the flow of the story, delayed its release and raised costs. In the end, MGM was still unhappy with the film and gave it a small release in North America with next to nothing in terms of advertising.

Critic Janet Maslin of The New York Times commented: "The animation [...] has an unfortunate way of endowing the male characters with doggy-looking muzzles. In any case, the mood is dopey and loud."

In spite of its poor commercial performance, the film soon received a cult following in the United States, although it was already popular in its native Canada. It occasionally received late-night airings on the cable channels HBO and Showtime, allowing the film to build a fanbase.

Notes

* The film's original title, Drats!, happens to be the name of Omar's group.
* Mok's full name is "Mok Swagger". His character is a parody of Mick Jagger, whose lawyers threatened to sue Nelvana.
* According to the commentary on the DVD release, the effects for the demon in the movie's final sequence were produced by smearing cow brains over one plane of a multiplane camera.

Gitaroo Man Lives! + Soundtrack

Gitaroo Man is a video game originally developed for the Sony PlayStation 2, published by Koei and developed by iNiS, with visual production by 326 (Mitsuru Nakamura) and music performed by COIL. The player character is U-1 ("Yūichi": a common Japanese boys' name; pronounced "you-one" in the North American and European releases), a young boy who is frequently ridiculed by classmates and passed over by Little Pico, the girl of his dreams. The story proper begins when Puma, a dog with the ability to speak, teaches U-1 to play the guitar, simultaneously teaching the controls of the game to the player, and subsequently revealing to him that he is the last legendary hero of Planet Gitaroo, a title which makes him a target for many varied individuals.

Despite a number of positive reviews, the North American and European versions of Gitaroo Man were produced in very low quantites by Koei and, as a result, have become somewhat rare, and is regarded as a cult video game.

In 2006, a Gitaroo Man port was released for Sony's PSP console. Gitaroo Man Lives! is a direct port of the PS2 game, but with two new songs that can be played in 'Duet' mode, a newly introduced cooperative mode. The songs are 'Metal Header', a rap/rock track, and 'Toda Pasión', a fast-paced samba number, similar to a Carlos Santana song. The game features Wi-Fi multiplayer and the ability to choose easy or normal difficulty settings, a feature which was only vaguely available in the original PS2 game as the unlockable 'Master's play'.

Gameplay

Each battle comprises a separate level, divided into five types of sections:

* Charge: Successful notes charge up energy for battle.

* Attack: Successful notes deplete enemy's energy. Misses deplete player's energy.

* Guard: Successful presses avoid attack. Misses deplete player's energy.

* Harmony: Same as Attack phase, although this is not broken up by Guard phases.

* End: Same as Harmony, but player's energy does not deplete if notes are missed.

The exceptions to this format are "Void", which is purely Guard phase, and "Legendary Theme (Acoustic)" which is purely Attack phase. These songs, as well as "Overpass/Legendary Theme (Album Version)" are excluded from the multiplayer mode.

Each level typically opens with a Charge phase, in which the player increases their health through playing the Gitaroo. A series of alternating Attack and Guard phases follows, in which the player attempts to drop his opponent's health bar by playing the Gitaroo, and avoids the same by dodging incoming attacks, respectively. If the player survives until the end of the song, then he must complete the Harmony phase to finish the level. The opponent's health bar doesn't so much represent his/her health as it does the progress through the song. If a player does not deal enough damage to an opponent by the end of a segment, that segment will be repeated (with the exception of some levels, most battle phases have two different tunes per segment, that are randomly selected each time a level is played.)

During the Charge, Attack, and Harmony phases, a line called the "trace line" scrolls toward a dot in the center of the screen (the "attack point") from outside of the visible area. There are yellow circles with orange tails on the trace line (called "phrase bars") corresponding to the rhythm of the song. When the beginning of a phrase bar reaches the attack point, the player must follow the direction of the trace line with the analogue stick while simultaneously pressing any face button for the duration of each phase bar.

In the Charge phase, successfully completing a phase bar grants the player a little more health; in Attack phases, completing phase bars drops the opponent's health, while missing them drops a little of the player's health. The Harmony phase acts the same as an Attack phase, but at this point the enemy's health is irrelevant. The magnitude of the gain in health or drop in opponent's health depends on how accurately the player hit the phase bar. Long phase bars can give their effect a second time if the button is released before the end of the bar, the bonus being greater the longer the button is held.

The phase bars tie into the music by fading in Gitaroo Man's guitar track in the song when they are hit, and causing it to fade back out when missed. Thus, the quality of the player's game playing ties in with the quality of Gitaroo Man's guitar playing.

The Guard phase differs in that the player is responsible for pressing one of the four buttons on the controller at the correct time; the analog stick is not used. Corresponding to the layout of these buttons, a triangle scrolls in from the top of the screen, a circle from the right, a square from the left, and an X from the bottom. When these icons hit the aforementioned attack point in the center, usually following the rhythm of the opponent's part of the music, the player must press the corresponding button to avoid losing health.

Most of the game's music uses a call and response pattern in order to allow for alternating Attack and Guard phases, with Gitaroo Man and his rival dominant in each respectively. The Charge and Harmony phases are typical intros and codas, with the rival tending to musically dominate the Charge phase, and Harmony phase led by Gitaroo Man.

The Gitaroo Man Original Soundtrack is an audio CD released in 2001, containing the majority of the songs found in the PS2 video game Gitaroo Man. Katamari wa Damacy

Katamari wa Damacy is the official soundtrack for the PlayStation 2 video game We Love Katamari. It was released in Japan on July 20, 2005 and features music from Namco composers Yu Miyake, Akitaka Tohyama, Asuka Sakai, Hideki Tobeta, and Katsuro Tajima. It also features a plethora of Japanese artists, including DOKAKA, Illreme, Arisa, Kirinji, YOU, Karie Kahimi, Maki Nomiya and Shigeru Matsuzaki.

It does not include all the music from the game, omitting many of the instrumental tracks heard throughout the game. However, these omissions were later added on the second disc of the soundtrack of the Me & My Katamari PSP video game.

Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII (Undub Version)/PSP Game

Crisis Core - Final Fantasy VII is an action role-playing game developed by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable. The game is a prequel to Final Fantasy VII and is also the fourth installment in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. Production was overseen by Yoshinori Kitase, the director of the original Final Fantasy VII, with Hajime Tabata as the game's director and Tetsuya Nomura as the game's character designer.

The game mainly focuses around Zack Fair, a 2nd Class SOLDIER, and the events leading up to his destined demise. He meets many of the Final Fantasy VII characters, including Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough, with whom he develops strong bonds. The game's storyline takes the player from the war with the Wutai to the events at Nibelheim, and right up to the time just before the Final Fantasy VII beginning. Some of the missing events or plot holes from Nibelheim and afterwards are explained in the animated feature, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII.

Development and release

The game was announced at E3 2004 before the release of the PlayStation Portable. Its first trailer consisted of clips from Last Order. In an interview for Famitsu, Tetsuya Nomura had stated that a playable demo of the game would be ready by the end of 2006. However, there was no mention of whether the demo would be openly available to PSP owners. A playable demo was available at Jump Festa 06.

On September 13, 2007 Square Enix released a special edition bundle for Crisis Core, which included a copy of the game that had a special box cover art of Zack standing in front of Shinra Headquarters holding the Buster Sword in front of him. A special silver colored PlayStation Portable Slim and Lite with Final Fantasy VII 10th Anniversary insignia on the back, on one side, designed by Tetsuya Nomura, and the meteor from Final Fantasy VII on the other side was included along with a Buster Sword strap. As with many limited edition Final Fantasy VII releases by Square Enix, the bundle was limited to 77,777 units.

On December 17th, 2007 it was announced that Crisis Core would be coming to the United States on March 25, 2008. If pre-ordered from certain retailers such as Gamestop, the buyer may receive a Shinra UMD case, depending on how long supplies last at each retailer and if pre-ordered from Best Buy, the buyer may receive Crisis Core with a metallic foil cover. Two versions of the game were released in Europe: a limited edition version only available online, and then only when pre-ordered. This limited edition version includes special slipcase packaging and a book of promotional CG artwork entitled The Art of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. In Australia and Europe, a bundle with the game and limited edition Crisis Core engraved silver PlayStation Portable was released on June 20th.

Gameplay

Crisis Core utilizes both action- and menu-based elements. The battle system is known as the Digital Mind Wave, and revolves around a series of reels at the upper left corner of the screen which spin continuously as long as there are Soldier Points (SP) left to consume. Each reel rotates independently and upon lining up three reels of the same character and value, a power-up is awarded to Zack.

Enemies can be attacked physically and magically. Materia makes a return, fully customizable and in multiple varieties, including green (spells) and yellow (extra commands such as Steal or Sense). In addition, materia can be fused together to enhance the materia's abilities or to make an entirely new materia. The materia the player has equipped determine the magic and special commands on the battle menu. Defensive and evasive maneuvers can also be used.

Following the completion of the game, the player will obtain a New Game Plus option. The North American and European releases of Crisis Core have an added difficulty mode to the game which causes the enemies to gain doubled stats, including a 10x HP gain.

Reception

Crisis Core sold 350,000 copies in Japan on its release date, including the 77,777 Limited Edition PSP/Crisis Core bundles. Square Enix recently announced that Crisis Core was its best-selling game across all regions from April through September with 710,000 copies sold in Japan.

Crisis Core has received generally positive reviews. With individual scores of 9/9/8/9, the game received an overall rating of 35/40 points from Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu. GameSpot gave the game a score of 9/10, praising its plot, as well as its overall presentation. Due to this, the game was credited as an "Editor's Choice". IGN gave it 8.5/10, citing its great overall presentation and story. It also received a place amongst the "Editor's Choice" gallery of recommended games for the PSP platform. On Metacritic, it has an average score of 83/100. X-Play gave it a 2/5 with complaints about the unskippable cutscenes, dialogue, gameplay, and plot. On April Fools' Day, in response to criticism over their original review, they "decided to give the game a second look and give it a re-review, this time with a clear unbiased perspective", and giving it a 6/5.

In March 2008, Crisis Core sold 301,600 copies upon its first month of release in the United States, behind the sales of God of War: Chains of Olympus, which sold 340,500 copies, making Crisis Core the second best-selling game for the PSP during the month of March and the sixth best-selling game overall. As of September 30, 2008, Square Enix announced that Crisis Core had sold 1,920,000 units worldwide, with 820,000 of those sales coming from Japan.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Original Soundtrack is the soundtrack of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. It was released on October 10, 2007 by Warner Music Japan and covers 55 pieces across two discs with a duration of 1:14:04. The music was primarily composed by Takeharu Ishimoto, with a few tracks provided by Kazuhiko Toyama. The soundtrack also includes remixes of various tunes from the original Final Fantasy VII score, as well as a vocal theme song entitled "Why", performed by Ayaka. Dirge of Cerberus - Final Fantasy VII is a third person shooter/RPG video game developed and published by Square Enix. It is part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII metaseries, a multimedia collection set within the universe of the popular 1997 video game Final Fantasy VII.

The game was released on January 26, 2006 in Japan, August 15, 2006 in North America and November 17, 2006 in Europe and in Australia.

Gameplay

Dirge of Cerberus is a third-person shooter (the first game of this genre developed by Square Enix) with RPG elements. Battles occur in real-time, with the HUD displaying information including Vincent's HP and MP, the currently selected item and the quantity thereof, and a cross-hair to aid in targeting enemies. Defeating enemies yields EXP, which is totalled at the end of each stage and can either be used to level up Vincent, increasing his statistics, or converted to gil, which can be used to purchase items and equipment upgrades at jukebox-shaped shops scattered throughout each stage, or the shop at the end of a stage, which also allows the purchase of additional equipment.

Unlike Final Fantasy VII, where a character could equip three types of equipment (weapon, armour and accessory), Vincent's equipment consists solely of his weapon, which has amalgamated the effects of armour and accessories through customization. Players can customize three weapons through the frame (Vincent's handgun, Cerberus, introduced in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and named after the three headed guard dog of Hades from Greek mythology, as well as a rifle, Hydra and a machine gun, Griffon, two new weapon types also named after Greek mythological creatures (although the spelling "Griffon" is incorrect in terms of the reference) and the size of the barrel (short-, regular or long-barrel, with longer barrels affording targeting of enemies that are further away at the cost of weight). Accessories include a sniper scope, charms (such as the Cerberus charm) which can increase Vincent's defense and decrease the weight of the gun (which affects the speed of Vincent's actions) among other things, and materia, which returns from Final Fantasy VII and enables magic shots with special properties that use up MP. All weapons have limited ammunition, which is dropped by defeated enemies, but can also be bought at shops. Ammunition capacity can be increased through upgrades.

Limit Breaks also return from the original game. Two of Vincent's Limit Breaks are available in Dirge of Cerberus: the Galian Beast, Vincent's first Limit Break, can be activated in two different ways: in the Japanese version of the game, it can be activated when the MP gauge is full. Upon transformation, the gauge slowly decreases and, once the gauge becomes empty, Vincent returns to human form. In the American and European versions of the game, the Galian Beast transformation can be activated through the use of an item called the "Limit Breaker". The effect lasts for around 30 seconds, upon which time the transformation reverses automatically. In all versions of the game, the transformation can be reverted by the player by pressing the L1 and R1 buttons at the same time. The other Limit Break is Chaos, Vincent's final and most powerful form, who serves as a major plot device and is playable only in the final stage of the game, when it is permanently enabled. Also, in specific areas of the game, such as in Training Mode, when Vincent's Limit Break is activated, instead of transforming into the Galian Beast, Vincent's body would pulse a color; his firing rate would increase, and all his attacks would be more powerful.

Development

Director Takayoshi Nakazato said that he was a big fan of the PC game Half-Life and wanted to turn it into an RPG, and he has done so, in the form of Dirge of Cerberus. This is the last game in chronological order in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, and is often referred to by the staff of the game as "the ending finale to Final Fantasy VII". However, producer Yoshinori Kitase has recently stated in an interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly that it's not necessarily the end of Final Fantasy VII's story, but will provide resolution to Vincent's personal story, just as Advent Children resolves Cloud's. The game's secret epilogue also leaves the door open, introducing a mysterious character named Genesis, or "G", who speaks in a cryptic fashion that suggests the story is not yet over.

The North American and European releases of Dirge of Cerberus received a major overhaul due to the fact that the developers were not satisfied with the final Japanese version; the developers also wanted to make the game more single player oriented.

* Vincent's running speed is 1.2 times faster, and he can perform a double-jump and do ranged and melee attacks in midair. Also, his dive-roll dodge move is supplanted with a dash move.

* Vincent's weapon can be customized to make it lighter, so there is no sluggishness when drawing his weapon.

* Limit Breaks no longer detract from the magic bar; instead, a single-use item can be used to perform the attack.

* "Easy Mode" has been removed, replaced with an "Extra Hard" mode. This new mode includes unlockables such as 40 special missions, a character-model viewer, and artwork and sound galleries.

* Online Multiplayer support was removed due to the poor popularity of PlayOnline in America, and lack of PS2 HDD support in the U.S. Missions from the Multiplayer Mode were reworked into some of the missions that can be unlocked in "Extra Hard" mode, however, this contains none of the additional storyline presented in the Japanese Multiplayer Mode.

* The game retains support for mouse and keyboard peripherals for PC First-person shooter-style gameplay.

Dirge of Cerberus - Final Fantasy VII International was released by Square Enix in Japan on September 4, 2008 as part of their Ultimate Hits lineup. This version retains all of the new features incorporated into the North American and European releases, and also includes the cutscenes that were originally only available in the Japanese online Multiplayer Mode.

Reception

Upon its release in Japan, the game received mixed reviews. Gaming magazine Dengeki PS2 rewarded the game with a 313/400 while Famitsu scored it a lower 28/40. The Famitsu review was not made available until three weeks after Dirge of Cerberus was released, contrary to the Dengeki PS2 score. The game managed to ship 392,000 units in its first week. Though sales were moderately successful, they paled in comparison to sales of other games in the Final Fantasy series.

Dirge of Cerberus received similarly mixed reviews from American critics. Gaming review sites IGN and Gamespot scored the game 7.0 and 6.0 respectively, 1UP.com gave the game a D+ while Electronic Gaming Monthly collectively scored the game with a 4.6/10 average from three reviews. G4's game review show, X-Play, gave the game a 2 out of 5 due to poor level design, weak gunplay, a tremendous amount of cutscenes and bad AI. Similar reviews also cited poor gameplay as a major criticism. At Game Rankings, the combined reviews for the game are currently 60%. The combined score from Metacritic is currently 57 out of 100 based on 51 reviews.

Soundtrack

Dirge of Cerberus - Final Fantasy VII Original Soundtrack is the soundtrack of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII game Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. The tracks were composed by Masashi Hamauzu and orchestrations were provided by Yoshihisa Hirano. Koji Haishima conducted the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, which performed the music for around half of the album. The soundtrack also contains the songs "Longing" and "Redemption" by Japanese rock musician Gackt, and was released through the artist's current label, Nippon Crown. The album was launched on February 15, 2006, and spans 53 tracks over 2 discs, covering a duration of 2:14:22. The regular release has the catalog numbers of CRCP-40139~40, while the limited edition has the catalog numbers of CRCP-40137~8. The limited edition of the soundtrack includes a case which is designed to hold the soundtrack, along with the game disc and the limited edition of the "Redemption" single and associated DVD, although these other items are not included with the album.

Final Fantasy VII is a console role-playing game developed by Square (now Square Enix) and published by Sony Computer Entertainment as the seventh installment in the Final Fantasy series. It was released in 1997 for Sony's PlayStation and in 1998 for Microsoft's Windows-based personal computers. The game is the first in the series to use 3D computer graphics, featuring fully rendered characters on pre-rendered backgrounds.

Set in a dystopian world, Final Fantasy VII's story centers on the powerful megacorporation Shinra, which is draining the life of the planet to use as an energy source. Players follow a young mercenary named Cloud Strife, who joins with several others to stop Shinra. Later in the story, the main antagonist, Sephiroth, develops a plan to summon a meteor with the intention of injuring the planet to a point where it would gather massive amounts of its life force in one spot. This would allow Sephiroth to collect all the life force and gain control of all living beings.

Development of Final Fantasy VII began in 1994 and the game was originally intended for the SNES, but it was later moved to the Nintendo 64. As the system's cartridges lacked space, Square decided to release the game for Sony's PlayStation instead. The music was scored by Final Fantasy veteran Nobuo Uematsu, while the series' long-time character designer, Yoshitaka Amano, was replaced by Tetsuya Nomura.

The game was a major critical and commercial success, and remains arguably the most popular title in the series. As of December 2005, Final Fantasy VII has sold more than 9.8 million copies worldwide, earning it the position of the best-selling Final Fantasy title and the second-best-selling PlayStation game of all-time. The ongoing popularity of the title led Square Enix to produce a series of sequels and prequels under the collective title Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.

Movie

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children is a 2005 CGI film directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Takeshi Nozue and produced by Yoshinori Kitase and Shinji Hashimoto. It was written by Kazushige Nojima and the music was composed by Nobuo Uematsu. Advent Children was the first announced title in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series.

The film is based on the highly successful 1997 console role-playing game Final Fantasy VII. It is set two years after the events in Final Fantasy VII, and follows Cloud Strife as he unravels the cause of the mysterious plague "Geostigma" that has beset the population.

Development

The idea for Advent Children came about when script writer Kazushige Nojima wrote a script that was "just a story about Cloud and Tifa and the kids". Visual Works, a company that has developed CG films for Square, picked Final Fantasy VII as the theme for a presentation that they were going to create. Square's research and development department worked with them on its launch, and director Tetsuya Nomura joined the crew after producer Yoshinori Kitase called him. Advent Children was originally going to be a game sequel, but Nomura stated that it was not possible due to a number of factors. However, the development team decided to stick with the original plan and work on it as a movie production.

According to Nomura in the DVD commentary, the original movie was only supposed to be 20 minutes. The details of the original story is that it featured someone requesting a message to be sent to Cloud. The message is then relayed to Cloud through several children and, when the message finally reaches Cloud, it is revealed who the messenger is. Although Nomura insisted that he very much liked the original script, as it became the foundation for the theme of the final result of the movie, he decided to make the project more grand in scope because early word of this movie generated so much interest that a demand for the film to be feature length eventually became so great that Nomura complied.

Animation

After Square and Enix merged to Square Enix in 2003, the production of the film started. As there was little time, Nomura began developing a textual storyboard instead of a visual storyboard. He made a timeline of the story and wrote down all the elements of the story from the beginning to the end as keywords. The creators of the film had no prior knowledge of how to make a movie, and it was based on their knowledge of in-game movies. They used motion capture in the film's battle scenes, but the parts that were not humanly possible had to be done by hand.

Reception

The DVD release of Advent Children sold over 420,000 copies in Japan in its first week, which was 93% of all published copies at the time. In 2006, Square Enix and Sony announced that the English language DVD and UMD releases combined had sold over 1.4 million units worldwide. Only 100,000 of these sales were in Europe, while the rest was sold in North America and Australia. Combined with the Japanese sales, Advent Children had sold over 2.4 million copies. The film achieved number one on Amazon.com's "Top Sellers" page days before the North American DVD release.

Advent Children has generally been well-received by the media. Many critics praised the visuals, but criticized the film for its main focus on the action rather than plot and character development. Chris Carle of IGN praised the sound and the English voice acting, but criticized the lack of commentary in the DVDs extras. He gave the film an overall score of nine out of ten. 1UP.com's James Mielke commented on the quality and clarity of the CG visuals as "genuinely amazing". He did however criticize the film's music, and called it "a bit sappy". Advent Children attained a 40% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the PlayStation Portable UMD release of the film got an 88% score at Metacritic, based on five reviews. The film received the Honorary Maria Award at the Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya on October 15, 2005. The film was also awarded for "best anime feature" at the 2007 American Anime Awards.

Soundtrack

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Original Soundtrack is the soundtrack of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, the computer-generated movie sequel to the original game. It was released on September 28, 2005, containing new material created specifically for the movie, as well as arrangements of tunes from the Final Fantasy VII soundtrack. The tracks were composed by Nobuo Uematsu, Keiji Kawamori, Kenichiro Fukui, and Tsuyoshi Sekito, and arranged by Kenichiro Fukui, Tsuyoshi Sekito, Keiji Kawamori, Shiro Hamaguchi, and Kazuhiko Toyama. The ending theme "Calling" was written and performed by former Boøwy vocalist Kyosuke Himuro. The album spans 26 tracks on two discs, covers a duration of 1:21:41, and has the catalog numbers of SQEX-10051~2. In addition to the regular release, a limited edition was produced. It contained alternate cover art featuring the Advent Children renditions of Cloud Strife and Sephiroth and a ten-page booklet containing credits and lyrics.

Last Order - Final Fantasy VII is a 2005 Original Video Animation produced by Square Enix, originally released in Advent Pieces: Limited. It is an addition to the United States limited edition releases of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. A trailer is available on the 2-disc special edition of Advent Children.

Last Order details two events that happened before Final Fantasy VII. One event revolves around the Nibelheim scenario that focused on Zack Fair, Cloud Strife, Sephiroth and Tifa Lockhart. The other involves Zack and Cloud on the run from Shinra. The anime cuts back and forth between these two flashbacks, linked by the Turk commander Tseng's reflection on the Nibelheim events.

Development and release

Last Order was produced by Square Enix and directed by Morio Asaka, with the screenplay being written by Kazuhiko Inukai. Madhouse animated the OVA with cooperation from the company Dr. Movie. Tetsuya Nomura, who had designed the characters of the previous Compilation of Final Fantasy VII installments as well as the original game, acted as the supervising director and provided the original character designs.

The OVA is an anime rendition of two flashbacks that took place in the original game; one is a past recollection on the Nibelheim incident and another is Zack and Cloud's escape from Nibelheim, and their time on the run from Shinra. Last Order also forms the basis of plotpoint in the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII PSP game, and serves as a tie-in with the mobile phone game Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, as several of the game's playable Turk characters appear as minor characters, with some even getting spoken lines. Sephiroth, unlike in other installments, also jumps into the reactor core in both Before Crisis and Last Order, instead of being thrown into it by Cloud.

Last Order was released with the "Ultimate Edition" of the Advent Children movie, Advent Pieces: Limited, in Japan on September 14 originally. The set contained Advent Children, Last Order, extra videos, a variety of merchandise, and a copy of the original Final Fantasy VII game. The North American release didn't include most of the merchandise, but instead included a few of the original Japanese videos and Last Order. The collectors set was released on by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in the United States, Square Enix Company in Japan, and Madhouse worldwide. There is currently no English dub, however the OVA is subtitled. Last Order is not available with an Advent Children UMD and has not yet been released separately.

Dissidia - Final Fantasy is an action game currently in development by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable as part of the campaign of the Final Fantasy series 20th anniversary. Information on the game was first released during the "Square Enix Party" event of May 2007. The game will be released on the 18th of December 2008 in Japan.

Gameplay

Dissidia: Final Fantasy's genre has been described as "dramatic progressive action" and its graphics will be in three dimensions. It will have wireless one-on-one gameplay and fights revolving around the use of individual special skills of characters to do damage to opponents. Players can also customize their characters with equipment.

Character movement is fully functional within the three-dimensional field map. Characters are able to perform special maneuvers using the environment, similar to the Reaction Command gameplay element of Kingdom Hearts II. Traps are scattered around each of the stages that decrease the Brave points of the character who activated them.

The overall objective of the game is to reduce the opponent’s HP to zero. This is done by attacking them using either of two attack types; the single-hit HP attack and combo-able assist attack; using the square or circle buttons on the PSP game controller respectively. Brave is the stat that determines each character's attack power. A character whose Brave points have been depleted can enter something called "Break mode", giving them a method of attack despite having no Brave points.

Another element known as EX Mode enables a character to inflict massive damage to an opponent. Each character has an EX gauge that increases by obtaining an item known as EX force that appears in each stage. A player enters the EX mode by pressing square and X on the gamepad when the EX gauge is filled. Performing a combo during EX mode allows a character to unleash an unavoidable special move called an "EX Burst", similar to the limit break in the main Final Fantasy series.

There are several tactics the player should be aware of in battle. Moving around and jumping is essential. Some characters even have triple jumps. The characters have a different set of attacking methods: HP attacks and Assist attacks without pressing a direction, HP attacks and Assist attacks while pressing a direction, HP attacks and Assist attacks in the air and so on. These attacks are significantly different from each other as some attacks are short range while some are long range, some are fast to initiate, while some are slow. The R button is guard and pressing X with R is a quick dodge. Certain characters can dual-wield by pressing the R button and the triangle at the same time.

Characters

The game will unite both protagonists and antagonists from installments of the main Final Fantasy series. Chaos will also make an appearance as the god of darkness, while a new character, Cosmos, will appear as the goddess of light. It is unknown, however, if these two will be playable or not. Recent articles released in Japanese magazines have stated that the game will have a storyline that requires playing through all of the characters to complete. There will be a minimum of twenty playable characters, and hidden characters are a possibility. Characters can gain customizable equipment, and will also be able to earn experience, gain levels and gil. Characters will have alternate costumes, including Squall's SeeD uniform, Firion's red caped costume from one of his Amano designs, and a design change for the Onion Knight that makes him resemble Luneth from Final Fantasy III DS.

Some of the characters are confirmed to have different forms in their EX modes, as well. Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy can transform into his upgraded class form (as bestowed by Bahamut in the game). Onion Knight from Final Fantasy III can transform into a Ninja or a Sage, the most powerful job classes from the NES version of the game, and Cloud of Darkness appears in her original green form with her two serpent minions. Additionally, Cecil from Final Fantasy IV switches between his Paladin and Dark Knight jobs. Golbez can fuse with his Shadow Dragon, the latter also seen in Final Fantasy IV. Exdeath can transform into his tree form, as seen in Final Fantasy V, and utilize the powers of the Void. Terra from Final Fantasy VI can morph into her Esper form, and her enemy, Kefka, can transform into his God form. Ultimecia from Final Fantasy VIII can fuse with her Guardian Force, Griever. Zidane and Kuja from Final Fantasy IX are shown in their Trance forms. And Jecht from Final Fantasy X can transform into Braska's Final Aeon.

Summons have also been confirmed to appear in the game and they will be accessible using Summon Stones. There will be over 50 types of summon in the game and they will all do completely unique things to affect a battle. So far Ifrit and Carbuncle have been revealed on the Japanese website of Dissidia.

An earlier interveiw with the team designing Dissidia said there is a possibility of secret characters. But none have yet to be revealed.

Development

On April 6, 2007, Square Enix filed for United States trademark registration of "DISSIDIA"; the mark's relation to Final Fantasy was omitted. Some sites speculated this was an edition of Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII. The title was connected with Final Fantasy when Square Enix introduced Dissidia: Final Fantasy on May 8, 2007 with an official Japanese website. The game is being directed by Yousuke Shiokawa and will feature music by Takeharu Ishimoto. Takeshi Nozue will be the movie director.

Tetsuya Nomura is responsible for the character designs, who will retain much of the look and style of Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations. Nomura comments to the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu that Tidus is designed to look younger than he was in Final Fantasy X to "match the design touch of the rest of the Dissidia" cast.

Jecht was chosen instead of Seymour to be the villain of FFX because developers stated that the characters needed to have a storyline relation, and putting Seymour in it would make the FFX character Yuna necessary also due to their connection. Jecht, as Tidus' father, has a stronger connection to him than Seymour does.

LocoRoco Soundtrack

LocoRoco (Rokoroko) is Sony's flagship Japanese video game released in 2006 for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld game console, and developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. LocoRoco has become Sony's "mascot" of the PSP and was featured in many advertisements for the PSP in Japan. Sony considered LocoRoco critical to the PSP success in Japan, and thus spent much resources in development and marketing of its star game, even including it with new PSP purchases in a special bundle. In the game, the player must tilt the environment by using the left or right shoulder buttons in order to maneuver a variety of coloured jelly-like characters through each level via gravity by literally tilting the whole planet. This game was created by producer Kazuhito Miyaki and game designer Tsutomu Kouno.

Music and soundtrack

Music plays a large part in LocoRoco, with each LocoRoco singing the song for the even numbered stages, and at the title screen. Three Mui Mui's sing during the odd numbered stages instead of the LocoRoco, and sometime pop up on the bottom left corner of the screen in the form of a choir in these stages. The LocoRoco have different voices depending on their color, varying in pitch and tone. Individual LocoRoco may also sing when they are split or merged together into one, producing choir-like singing or solo singing, respectively. The lyrics of the songs and "LocoRoco Language", a fictional language, were invented by Tsutomu Kouno to ensure that the music would be the same worldwide. The music was composed and performed (except for the vocals) by Nobuyuki Shimizu and Kemmei Adachi. The vocals are performed by Japanese children, as seen in one of LocoRoco's Japanese television commercials.

The LocoRoco Original Soundtrack has been released with 42 tracks from the video game on it.

Yoshitaka Amano - The Virgin

As the name implies, The Virgin is an artbook composed of different drawings of women. There is not one particular style on this artbook, or rather, there are all kind of styles that Amano knows. Furthemore, there is a particularly nice picture of Terra (Final Fantasy VI) drawn using Pop Art style.

Movie

The Warriors is a 1979 cult classic action/thriller film directed by Walter Hill and based on the 1965 novel by Sol Yurick.

Reception

The Warriors opened on February 9, 1979 in 670 theaters without advance screenings or a decent promotional campaign and grossed USD $3.5 million on its opening weekend. The following weekend the film was linked to sporadic outbreaks of vandalism and three killings - two in Southern California and one in Boston - involving moviegoers on their way to or from showings. This prompted Paramount to remove advertisements from radio and television completely and display ads in the press were reduced to the film's title, rating and participating theaters. In reaction, 200 theaters across the country added security personnel. Due to safety concerns, theater owners were relieved of their contractual obligations if they did not want to show the film, and Paramount offered to pay costs for additional security and damages due to vandalism. After two weeks free of incidents, the studio expanded the display ads to take advantage of reviews from reputable critics including Pauline Kael of The New Yorker. She wrote, "The Warriors is a real moviemaker's movie: it has in visual terms the kind of impact that 'Rock Around the Clock' did behind the titles of Blackboard Jungle. The Warriors is like visual rock". In its sixth week, The Warriors had grossed $16.4 million, well above its estimated $6-7 million budget.

A mild commercial success on its initial release, the film was panned by many critics as exploitative and superficial. Gary Arnold, in his review for the Washington Post, wrote, "None of Hill's dynamism will save The Warriors from impressing most neutral observers as a ghastly folly". In his review for Newsweek, David Ansen wrote, "Another problem arises when the gang members open their mouths: their banal dialogue is jarringly at odds with Hill's hyperbolic visual scheme". Frank Rich, in his review for Time, wrote, "Unfortunately, sheer visual zip is not enough to carry the film; it drags from one scuffle to the next . . . But The Warriors is not lively enough to be cheap fun or thoughtful enough to be serious". Yurick expressed his disappointment in the film version and speculated that it scared some people because "it appeals to the fear of a demonic uprising by lumpen youth", and appealed to many teenagers because it "hits a series of collective fantasies". President Ronald Reagan was also a fan of the film, even calling the film's lead actor, Michael Beck, to tell him he had screened it at Camp David and enjoyed it. In recent years, The Warriors has acquired the status of a cult film, along with a re-examination of its standing with some film critics. As of January 2008, the film has garnered a 93 percent "fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes.

Merchandise

While itself adapted from a novel, the film has been adapted into a number of other products as well. The film's soundtrack was released in the same year as the film. In 2005, Mezco Toyz released Warriors action figures, including Swan, Cleon, Cochise, Ajax, Luther, and a Baseball Fury.

The Warriors video game, based on the movie, was released by Rockstar Games on October 17, 2005. Levels 1 through 13 acts as a prequel to the film, creating backstory and elaborating on the characters from the film. Levels 14 through 18 recreates much of the film's events. Several of the actors from the movie returned to perform the voices for their original characters.

PSP Game

The Warriors is a beat 'em up video game published by Rockstar Games. It was released on February 12/2007 for PlayStation Portable. The game is based on the 1979 film, The Warriors. The console versions of game were developed at Rockstar Toronto, while the PSP port was developed by Rockstar Leeds.

Setting

In addition to covering events depicted in the movie, the video game also acts as a precursor, establishing the Warriors' reputation all throughout New York City. Levels 1 through 13 take place before the movie begins. After Level 13, the player is shown a CG cutscene duplicating, to an extent, the beginnings of the movie, with Cyrus's meeting. Levels 14 through 18 cover the movie itself.

Gameplay

The Warriors is an action-adventure game which focuses heavily on brawling. Like most games from Rockstar, several minor gameplay elements are mixed into the experience, such as the ability to use spray paint to mark turf or to insult other gangs. Diversity is one of the game's strong points, with missions requiring players to do everything from smashing up shops to collect protection money, to running through rival turf while wearing insulting t-shirts, to capturing opponents and getting information out of them (as opposed to beating them unconscious).

Rather than focusing entirely on the one versus many style found in most brawler games, The Warriors focuses largely on gang rumble style action, with the player being assisted by several other Warriors at once.

Throughout the game, you play as nine different Warriors in all of the levels.

Comparison between the video game and the movie

Both the game and the movie involve the same characters and locations. The primary difference, however, is in the fact that a large portion of the game takes place before the actual movie begins, with Rembrandt's initiation. The flashback missions show how Cleon formed the Warriors and how each of the other members joined. The Flashback missions take place in 1978, a full year before the movie is set. The events of the movie itself take place near the end of the game.

The game also looks deeper into various gangs and characters, fleshing them out and giving them personalities and backstories, where they might have only been seen in the background or mentioned in passing in the film. Cleon, for example, is the leader of the Warriors. The game portrays him as somewhat of a protagonist, whereas he is only on screen during the first few minutes in the movie. The Hi-Hats are one of the gangs at Cyrus' conclave, but they are never named in the film, and only appear in the opening of the film. They are named, however, by the narrator of the theatrical trailer. The game has at least two missions in which the Hi-Hats feature prominently, giving a lot of depth to the group that many fans of the film had taken to calling "the mime gang."

The major plot points of the movie are all translated into interactive stages within the game.

The Warriors' insignia, a winged skull, is changed in the game to a cobra, a la the Saracens, with flaming wings. This was necessitated due to an already-existing royalty dispute over the design.

Many of the original actors voiced their roles in the video game, with the notable exceptions of Roger Hill (see "Controversy") and David Patrick Kelly (who played "Luther"). Most of the movie's original soundtrack is included in the game.

Controversy

Roger Hill, who played Cyrus in the movie, filed a lawsuit of $250,000 against Rockstar Games for using his voice and depicting him in the video game. He claimed that it would not have been difficult for Rockstar to pay, since the game made $37 million.

Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a progressive rock album by The Alan Parsons Project, released in 1976 (see 1976 in music). The album's avant-garde soundscapes kept it from being a blockbuster.

"The Raven" features actor Leonard Whiting on lead vocals, with Alan Parsons performing vocals through an EMI vocoder. According to the album's linear notes, "The Raven" was the first rock song ever to feature a digital vocoder.

The original version of the album was available for several years on vinyl and cassette, but was not immediately available on CD. This was due in part to Parsons' desire to rework some tracks. In 1987, Parsons completely remixed the album, including additional guitar passages and narration (by Orson Welles) as well as updating the production style to include heavy reverb and the gated drum sound of the 80s. The CD notes that Welles never met Parsons or Collaborator Eric Woolfson, but sent a tape to them of the performance shortly after the album was manufactured in 1976. In 1994 Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) released the original 1976 version on CD (UDCD-606), making the original available digitally for the first time. In 2007, a Deluxe Edition released by Universal Music included both the 1976 and the 1987 versions remastered by Alan Parsons during 2006 with eight additional bonus tracks.

Tears for Fears (sometimes informally abbreviated to TFF) are an English pop rock band formed in the early 1980s by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, which emerged after the dissolution of their first band, the mod-influenced Graduate. They were initially associated with new wave and the burgeoning wave of synthesizer bands of the early 1980s, but branched out into mainstream chart success. The band have sold more than 22 million albums worldwide (including over 8 million in the United States alone).

Formation

Orzabal and Smith met as teenagers in their home city of Bath, England. The duo joined future TFF drummer Manny Elias on the band called Neonwith Pete Byrne and Rob Fisher who went on to become Naked Eyes. Their professional debut came with the band Graduate, a Mod Revival/New Wave act drawing on the major influences of the time, including The Jam and Elvis Costello. In 1980, Graduate released an album, Acting My Age, and a single "Elvis Should Play Ska" (referring to Elvis Costello, not Presley). The single just missed the Top 100 in the UK, though it performed well in Spain and in the Netherlands.

By 1981, Orzabal and Smith were becoming more influenced by artists such as Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno. They departed from Graduate and formed a band called History of Headaches, a moniker which was then changed to Tears for Fears. The plan was for Orzabal and Smith to form the nucleus of the group and bring in surrounding musicians to help them complete the picture.

Tears for Fears were signed to Phonogram Records, UK in 1981 by A&R manager Dave Bates. Their first single as Tears for Fears, "Suffer the Children" (produced by David Lord), was released on that label in November 1981, followed by the first edition of "Pale Shelter" (produced by Mike Howlett) in March 1982.

Derivation of band name

The band's name is derived from the primal scream therapy treatment of the same name developed by Arthur Janov, which was made famous after John Lennon became Janov's patient. In a 2004 interview with VH1 UK, Orzabal and Smith said that when they finally met Janov in the mid-80s, they were disillusioned to find that he had become quite "Hollywood" and wanted the band to write a musical.

Discography

The Hurting (1983)

The band's third single "Mad World" hit the top 3 in the UK in November 1982. Their first album, The Hurting, was released in March 1983. For this LP (and the next), keyboard player and composer Ian Stanley and drummer Manny Elias were considered full members of the band, though Smith and Orzabal were still essentially the frontmen and public face of the band.

The album, produced by Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum, showcased synthesizer-based songs with lyrics reflecting Orzabal's bitter childhood and upbringing. The Hurting may be considered Tears for Fears' only true concept album, as references to emotional distress and primal scream therapy are found in nearly every song. The album strongly bears the behind-the-scenes influence of Daniel Lichtblau, commonly thought of as the "fifth" TFF member, owing to his premature departure from the group just as they were on the cusp of real fame. Lichtblau, a pianist, was a big proponent of the "double keyboard" effect that characterizes their early sound and is prevalent on this album. The album itself was a big success and had a lengthy chart run (65 weeks) in the UK, where it reached no.1 - also reaching the Top 20 in several countries and yielded the international hit singles "Mad World" (top 5 hit in South Africa), "Change" (top 30 hit in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Italy and South Africa), and a re-recorded version of "Pale Shelter" (all of which were Top Five in the UK).

Towards the end of 1983 the record company released a new, slightly more abstract single, "Way You Are", to keep the band in the public eye while they worked on their second album. The single was a top 30 hit in the UK, but did not come close to matching the success of their three previous hits, despite a national concert tour in December of that year (captured on the "In My Mind's Eye" live video release). The single, which heavily featured sampling and programmed rhythms, led to a departure in Tears for Fears' musical approach. In the liner notes to their B-sides album "Saturnine, Martial and Lunatic" they wrote that "this was the point we realised we had to change direction", although the somewhat experimental style of the single continued to be reflected to some extent in their forthcoming B-sides.

Songs from The Big Chair (1985)

A change of direction was initially instigated as they began working with a new producer, Jeremy Green, on their new single "Mothers Talk" in early 1984, but the band were ultimately unhappy with the results and so producer Chris Hughes was brought back into the fold and the "Mothers Talk" single reproduced for release in August 1984. A distinct departure from their earlier works, the single became a top 20 hit in the UK, but it was the follow-up single "Shout" (released in the UK in November 1984) that was the real beginning of the band's international success.

This top 5 hit paved the way for the second album Songs from the Big Chair (released in February 1985), which entered the UK album chart at no.2 and remained in the upper reaches of the chart for the next 12 months. They did away with the predominantly synth-pop feel of the first album, instead expanding into a more sophisticated sound that would become the band's stylistic hallmark. Anchored around the creative hub of producer Hughes, Stanley and Orzabal, the new Tears for Fears sound helped to propel Songs from the Big Chair into becoming one of the year's biggest global sellers and achieve quintuple-platinum sales status in the U.S. (where it remained the no.1 album for five weeks).

The album's success was in conjunction to the array of hit singles it yielded: "Mothers Talk" (the first to be released in the UK, but the last to be released in the US in a completely re-recorded form), "Shout" (#4 UK, #1 in the U.S., Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, etc., and a huge hit in other territories, in fact one of the biggest of the eighties), "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", (their biggest UK and Irish hit at #2 and another #1 in the U.S. and in Canada), "Head over Heels" (UK #12, US #3, Ireland #5, Canada #8) and "I Believe (A Soulful Re-Recording)" (UK #23 and Ireland #10). Some territories even saw the release of limited edition 10" singles for these hits, in addition to the regular 7" and 12" formats.

Following the album's release, the band went on a world tour that lasted most of the year. During this tour, Orzabal and Smith discovered an American female singer/pianist, Oleta Adams, who was performing in a Kansas City, Missouri hotel bar, and whom they invited to collaborate on their next album.

The album's title was inspired by the book and television miniseries Sybil, the chronicle of a woman with multiple personality disorder who sought refuge in her analyst's "big chair," Orzabal and Smith stating that they felt each of the album's songs had a distinctive personality of its own. The band had a song entitled "The Big Chair" which they had put on the B-side to "Shout" but decided not to include on the album. They also released a video collection/documentary entitled "Scenes From The Big Chair" the same year, while their first two earliest singles were re-released, both reaching the UK Top 75. In 1986, upon completion of the lengthy and exhausting Big Chair world tour, Manny Elias left the group.

Also in 1986, Orzabal and Stanley collaborated together on a side project named "Mancrab". They released one single, "Fish for Life," which was written for the soundtrack of the film "The Karate Kid, Part II." The track was written and produced by Orzabal and Stanley, and featured vocals by US singer/dancer Eddie Thomas.

The Seeds Of Love (1989)

It was 1989 before the group released its third album, The Seeds of Love (on which Ian Stanley appeared for the last time as a TFF member), at a reported production cost of over a million pounds. The album was written largely by Orzabal along with keyboardist Nicky Holland, who had toured with the band on their global 1985 "Big Chair" tour. Moving from various studios and using various sets of producers over many months, the band ultimately decided to scrap that previous work and take the reins themselves with assistance from engineer Dave Bascombe. Much of the material was recorded in jam sessions and later edited down. The length of the production left the band with towering debt and a record company eager to cash in on lost earnings. The album retained the band's epic sound while showing increasing influences ranging from jazz and blues to The Beatles, the last of which is evident in the hit single "Sowing the Seeds of Love" - the first record ever played on Atlantic 252, the UK and Ireland Longwave Radio station. Another single was "Woman in Chains" (Top 30 hit in the UK, in France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, etc.), on which Phil Collins played drums and Oleta Adams — whom Orzabal would later guide to a successful solo career — shared vocals. The album was a worldwide success, entering the UK album charts at no.1, making the Top 10 in the US (though charting lower there than its multi-platinum predecessor) and in numerous other countries, eventually going on to sell millions of copies worldwide. The band set out on an extensive "Seeds of Love" tour sponsored by Philips to start recovering the debt incurred. The show would be captured on the "Going to California" video as the singles "Advice For The Young At Heart" and "Famous Last Words" delivered some moderate chart success.

A 64-page companion book, simply titled "Tears for Fears - The Seeds of Love", was released by Virgin Books in 1990 and offered extensive insight from Orzabal, Holland and Adams into the songwriting and production process for the album, as well as the musical scores for each track and rare promotional photographs from the era.

Elemental (1993) / Raoul and the Kings of Spain (1995)

In 1993, Orzabal (still under the name Tears for Fears) released the album Elemental together with longtime collaborator Alan Griffiths and co-producer Tim Palmer. It yielded the international hit "Break It Down Again" (Top 20 in the UK, France, Italy, the Netherlands, etc.) and was supported with a successful U.S. college tour, where "Break It Down Again" reached #25.

The album was top 5 in the UK and France and top 30 in several other countries. But it charted considerably lower in the US than the previous two studio albums, though was still certified Gold status for sales of over half a million copies there. The singles "Cold", "Elemental" and "Goodnight Song" met with minor chart success in certain territories.

Orzabal, still working with Griffiths and Palmer, released another Tears for Fears album in 1995, Raoul and the Kings of Spain, a more contemplative work that delved into his own Spanish heritage and showed a new Latin musical influence (Raoul was originally the name Orzabal's parents wanted to give him, and is also the name of his own first son). Orzabal stated that it was not a concept album but that there was a theme, namely that of familial relationships. Although it continued Tears for Fears' legacy of outstanding songwriting, big production values, and varied influences, the album was not a commercial success by Tears for Fears standards, though minor chart success came via the single release of the title track (top 40 in the UK) and (to a lesser extent) the single "God's Mistake". Raoul and the Kings of Spain also included a reunion with Oleta Adams who collaborated with Orzabal on the track "Me and My Big Ideas".

A worldwide tour, which included a frenzied welcome in Latin America, had the effect of straining Orzabal's energies rather than supporting them. The release of Raoul was delayed for nearly a year due to a last-minute label switch from Mercury to Epic, and the ensuing confusion (Mercury had already begun promotion) did not help the album's chances either. Although the tracklisting for the album had been changed at the record company's request, Sony did not extend Tears for Fears' contract.

The Game

Shadow of the Colossus, released in Japan as Wander and the Colossus (Wanda to Kyozō), is a Japanese-developed action-adventure video game developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) for the PlayStation 2. The game was released in North America and Japan in October 2005 and PAL territories in February 2006. The game was created by SCEI's International Production Studio 1, the same development team responsible for the cult hit Ico.

The game focuses on a young man named Wander who must travel across a vast expanse on horseback and defeat sixteen beings, known as colossi, to restore the life of a girl. The game is unusual within the action-adventure genre in that there are no towns or dungeons to explore, no characters with which to interact, and no enemies to defeat, other than the colossi. Shadow of the Colossus has been described as a puzzle game, as each colossus' weakness must be identified and exploited before it can be defeated.

Gameplay Basics

Progression through Shadow of the Colossus occurs in cycles. Beginning at a central point in an expansive landscape, the player seeks out and defeats a colossus, and is then returned to the central point to repeat the process. To find each colossus, Wander must raise his sword while in a sunlit area to reflect beams of light, which will converge when the sword is pointed in the right direction of the next encounter. The journey to a colossus is seldom a straightforward matter—stretches of varied terrain often require that a detour be taken along the way. Most colossi are located in remote areas, such as atop cliffs or within ancient structures, and tend to be located progressively farther away from the central area.

Once a colossus is found, the player must discover its weaknesses to defeat it. Each colossus dwells in a unique lair, and many colossi cannot be defeated without making use of the surrounding environment. Every colossus has at least one weak point, indicated by a glowing sigil. If the area is lit by sunlight, the player may use the sword's reflected light to temporarily illuminate these sigils. Each colossus has areas covered with fur or protruding ledges, which the player may use to grip and scale the colossus while it thrashes about in an attempt to dislodge the player. While scaling a colossus, the player must act quickly, as Wander has a limited grip gauge that decreases while he hangs onto the creature.

Wander and the colossi have life bars to indicate their remaining health. The colossi's health will decrease significantly when their weak points are attacked, while Wander can be harmed by a colossus' attacks or falls from great heights. Throughout the game, Wander is equipped with only a sword and a bow.

Agro and the environment

Wander's horse, Agro, plays a large role in the game. In addition to serving as a means of transportation, Agro is vital in defeating some of the Colossi. There are, however, many places that Agro cannot reach. Colossi often inhabit areas beyond deep water or obstacles that must be scaled. Agro cannot travel beyond these, and when separated from Wander by such obstacles, cannot participate in the following battle. During such times, Agro waits faithfully for Wander to return from the battle.

The environment must be used to the player's advantage more often as the game progresses. The first two battles take place on simple, large, flat areas of land, with the only goal being to discover how to scale the colossi and attack their weak points. However, the majority of the following fourteen battles require that some aspect of the battlefield be used.

Plot and setting

During Shadow of the Colossus, the player receives little information concerning the backstories of the characters and their relationships with one another. The game clearly takes place in a fantasy setting, with most of the game's events occurring within a vast and unpopulated peninsula separated from the outside world by a mountain range to its North and sea to the South and East. The presence of ruins and other ancient structures indicate that the area was once a settlement.

The region is only accessible via a small cleft in the mountains to the north, leading to a massive stone bridge. This bridge spans half the distance of the landscape and terminates at a large temple called the "Shrine of Worship" located at its center. It is, however, forbidden to enter the land, which is characterized by diverse geographical features, such as lakes and deserts, in addition to human-made structures.

Reception

Shadow of the Colossus's commercial reception was positive, with sales of 140,000 copies in its first week at retail in Japan, reaching number one in the charts. Almost 80% of the initial Japanese shipment was sold within two days. These figures compare favorably with Ico, which was well received by critics but failed to sell a significant number of copies. The game was placed on Sony's list of Greatest Hits titles on August 8, 2006.

Unlike Ico, Shadow received far more exposure, due in part to Sony putting its weight behind a massive advertising campaign. It was advertised in game magazines, on television and on the internet, including a viral marketing campaign launched in October 2005. The site posted links to several websites claiming that the remains of five giants resembling certain colossi had been discovered in various parts of the world. The website has since been taken down. Some speculate that Ico's sales figures could have been improved if similar advertising efforts were made before its release.

Awards

Shadow of the Colossus has received several awards, including recognition for "Best Character Design", "Best Game Design", "Best Visual Arts" and "Game of the Year", as well as one of three "Innovation Awards" at the 2006 Game Developers Choice Awards. At the 2006 DICE Summit, the game won the award for "Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction" at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, while it received one of two "Special Rookie Awards" at the Famitsu Awards 2005. It was nominated for "Best Original Music", "Best Artistic Graphics" and "Best PS2 Game", yet also "Most Aggravating Frame Rate" in GameSpot's awards for 2005, while it won "Best Adventure Game" and "Best Artistic Design" in IGN's Best of 2005 awards, who cited Agro as the best sidekick in the history of video games. Two years after its release IGN listed Shadow as the fourth greatest PlayStation 2 game of all time. Games Radar awarded it Best Game Of The Year 2006 (being released in the UK in early 2006, later than the US), while the game's ending was selected as the fourth greatest moment in gaming by the editors of GamePro in July 2006.

The Soundtrack

While the game has an extensive orchestral soundtrack, the music is only heard during cut scenes and colossus encounters, while time spent at the Shrine of Worship and traversing the landscape is silent save for the sounds made by the protagonist, his horse and their surroundings. The open nature of the game world and lack of life, coupled with this limited use of music, aids in establishing an atmosphere of solitude, similar to that of Ico.

Roar of the Earth is the soundtrack to Shadow of the Colossus. It was released in Japan on December 7, 2005. There are currently no announced plans to release the album in other territories. The game's score was composed by Kō Ōtani (credited in-game as "Kow Otani"), whose previous video game work included the soundtracks to the PlayStation 2 flight simulator Sky Odyssey and the PlayStation shooter Philosoma. He has also worked on several of the 1990s-era Gamera films, as well as a variety of anime. Roar of the Earth won the award for "Soundtrack of the Year" in the US-based video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly.

The Artbook

The Shadow of the Colossus Official Artbook is a collection of artwork (both conceptual and in-game) from Shadow of the Colossus. It doubles as a detailed visual guide on how to defeat the sixteen colossi; for this reason, it has frequently been referred to as the "Shadow of the Colossus Official Guidebook" by retailers. It also included a large collection of early concept and discarded colossi.

It was released in Japan on January 16, 2006. There are currently no plans to release it anywhere else.

Where's Wally? (titled Where's Waldo? in the United States and Canada, Onde está o Wally? in Portugal, Où est Charlie? in France and Quebec, Find Holger in Denmark, Hvar er Valli? in Iceland, Look for Wally in Japan, Wo ist Walter? in Germany, ¿Dónde está Wally? in Spain, Dov'è Wally? in Italian and Где Уолли? in Russian) is a series of children's books created by the British illustrator Martin Handford. The goal is to find a certain man, Wally, in a busy picture full of people. Wally dresses in a red and white striped shirt and shellfish hat, carries a wooden walking stick, and wears glasses. He is always losing things, including books, camping equipment and even his shoes, and readers are invited to spot these items in the illustrations as well.

The books consist of a series of complex full-page illustrated pictures of hundreds of tiny people doing various things. The purpose is to find Waldo among the group, which could be difficult as he is always well hidden.

For the initial UK release of Martin Handford's book in 1987, he titled the character "Wally". The "Where's Waldo" trademark was adapted for 28 countries. In addition to language translation, each franchise gave a new name and personality to the character. He became Charlie in France, Walter in Germany, Holger in Denmark, Valli in Iceland, Willy in Norway and Hetti in Sri Lanka & Goa. Waldo can also be found in Japan. In Israel, Wally got renamed as Effy, and was a huge success at the time of its release. However the most successful of the franchises, even surpassing the original "Wally" brand, was the North American adaptation, "Where's Waldo?"

Where as the early Waldo books were identical to the simultaneous Wally releases - except for the character's name - merchandising and spin-off productions expanded the Waldo franchise and character. Although Waldo and Wally are identical in appearance, their characters and personalities developed differently - Waldo became a hip and tech-savvy American world traveler, while Wally became intellectual and somewhat goofy.

Wally became a pop-culture sensation in the early 1990s. Aside from the adaptations of Handford's books, the US franchise grew to include licensing of Waldo for video games, spin-off books, magazines, dolls, toys and a Waldo television series. Many of the Waldo products were later reworked and translated for other national markets - including turning "Waldo"-created productions into "Wally".

Willy (Waldo) Fans

Although Wally is the name used in Handford's home country, and was the first title used, Handford and his publisher refer to the character and franchise in many press releases and interviews as "Waldo." In the publishing world the "Wally" brand has become inferior, dwarfed by merchandising and huge success of "Waldo." And although the wordplay was lost on audiences outside North America, the name of the intrepid traveler's nemesis was even derived by Handford from spelling "Waldo" backwards to create Odlaw.

On January 22, 2007, the "Where's Wally" franchise - and thus "Where's Waldo" as well - was bought by the UK-based children's company Entertainment Rights.

The first two books

Where's Wally? (US title: "Where's Waldo?") (1987)

Where's Waldo? is the title of the first Waldo book. Released in 1987, the book was the result of more than two-years of detailed work by illustrator Martin Handford.

Where's Waldo? introduces readers to Waldo, a distinctively dressed man, as he sets off on "a world-wide hike". Waldo travels to everyday places – such as the beach, the ski slops and the zoo. The book features 12 detailed 2-page illustrated spreads of the different locations. Somewhere amid the crowded scene is Waldo and readers are asked to scour the detailed illustrations to locate the lost traveler. Each scene is accompanied by a postcard to the reader from Waldo, who introduces the scene and comments on his travels.

Waldo sets out on his journey equipped with 12 items to help his on his travels. He carries a walking stick, kettle, mallet, cup, backpack, sleeping bag, binoculars, camera, snorkel, belt, bag and shovel. As Waldo journeys from location to location he loses one of these item, and asks the reader to locate the object left behind in each scene as well.

The evolution of Willy (Waldo)

At the end of the book there is a collection of check-lists of other things to find in each spread. Readers are asked to go back to the beginning and re-explore each scene locating other objects, gags and people in each picture.

Other editions

Where's Waldo? was re-released in 1997 in an updated "special edition" version to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the inital publication. The special edition relocated Waldo in each scene, updated various items and inserted new characters to spot – including Woof, Wenda, Wizard Whitebeard, Odlaw and the Waldo Watchers. This version has since become the standard 2nd edition version – replacing the original first edition in book stores and subsequent releases.

The book’s original release was in 12.5 x 10.1 inch hardback book. Since the initial release there have been subsequent paperback editions (12.2 x 9.7), "big book" editions (16.1 x 13) and "mini" editions (6 x 4.6) which came with a special magnify glass.

The "On The Beach" scene was re-released as a poster in The Magnificent Poster Book!. New characters, such as Wenda and Wizard Whitbeard, were inserted into the image for the poster along with other minor changes to scene.

Production

In the early part of the 1980s Martin Handford was working as a freelance illustrator, specializing in drawing crowd scenes. After seeing some of Handford's artwork, David Bennett, a business associate and an art director at Walker Books in England, contacted the artist about developing a children's book showcasing his singular talent. It was only then that the character Waldo was conceived. Waldo was created to provide a link between each crowd scene and provide a focus and purpose for the book. Handford explained in a 1990 interview that "a book full of crowd scenes has no central theme, but adding a wacky character for the reader to look for adds a purpose to each page. That's who Waldo is - an afterthought."

Handford first began working on the book in 1985. Handford illustrated each the 12 scenes for the book - working at time for more than eight weeks to create just one of the two-page Waldo spreads. David Lloyd, a Walker Books editor, helped Handford polish the minimal, yet nessesary, text found in the postcards throughout the book. Handford insists there is no science behind where Waldo was hidden in each page. He says that as he would work his way through a picture, and simply add Waldo when he came to what he felt was "a good place to include him".

When Handford first designed his leading man, he named him Wally - based on a British slang term for a somewhat spacey person. However the American publishers of the books felt the name would not resonate with the North American readers; so when the book was finally published worldwide in 1987, the character was renamed Waldo (however the "Wally" title was retained for the UK markets).

Despite being "an afterthought" to tie Handford's illustrations together, the public responded to the character of Waldo. Handford stated "as it turns out, the fans were more interested in the character than in the crowd scenes." The success of the book and character led to more than 7 subsequent Waldo book by Handford - along with numerous additional publications, an animated television show, an internationally syndicated comic strip and countless other merchandise and spin-off productions.

After two years of development, the book was finally released in September 1987. However Handford did not sit on his laurels after the book hit stores. A follow-up book, Find Waldo Now, was released less than a year later in September 1988.

Controversies and criticisms

Where's Waldo was banned from many librarys in the 1990s, and ranks #88 on the American Library Association's list of "100 Most Frequently Banned Books". The book was challenged due to a partially exposed breast found in the beach scene of the book. Due to the controversy the woman was covered up in the 1997 special edition release.

Find Waldo Now was the second Wally book. It was first published in 1988. In the book Waldo travels through time as he visits many different locations and events. He also loses a book on each page, which the reader has to find.

The book was re-released in October 1997 under the title Where's Waldo Now?. In this special edition, Waldo was moved in each picture and additional characters were added for the reader to find (Woof, Wizard Whitebeard, Wenda, Odlaw, the Waldo Watchers and others).
